I have been taking photographs since I was a teenager. As my interests changed over the years, so has the subject matter of my photographs. Sometimes I was more interested in people, sometimes in the natural and built environments, and sometimes in showing how the past affects contemporary life. I have always sought to share with viewers what was visually compelling to me.
I usually use a 35mm range finder camera body with interchangeable lenses, because the 35mm format gives me portability while providing fine image quality even when the image is enlarged to 20 x 30 inches. I work exclusively in film, because I find that film provides the greatest tonal range. For the same reason, I make chromogenic prints. The images shown on this web site have been digitized from the negative or from a black and white print.
If I cannot capture what I see through the view finder after exposing a few frames, then I will not do so by shooting an entire roll. I have also found that manipulation in the darkroom will not bring out what I failed to capture when exposing the film. My prints are therefore full frame and have not been cropped, burned or dodged.
I was born in Philadelphia in 1945 and have lived in Brooklyn since 1970.
